Polarlicht-Überraschung zum Perseidenmaximum
Aurora surprise at Perseid maximum
The night of 11/12 August was this year's Perseids maximum. The moon in the first quarter hardly interfered and the weather brought mostly cloudless, transparent skies. So it was a good opportunity to try and take pictures of the Perseids. And because you can make a wish with shooting stars, the X 1.3 flare on 8 August also brought a brief phase of auroras that night. In the northern Ruhr region with its light pollution, the auroras were only photographically detectable, but in darker areas and especially from the north of Germany, there were definitely visual sightings.
The high level of auroral activity is still continuing and there may still be opportunities to observe or photograph auroras in the coming night.
